Acrylic, watercolour and pen painting of a fruit bowl based on Audrey Flack’s 1980 ‘Energy Apples’ and Gerhard Richter’s 1987 ‘Apples’. Flack used food and other everyday objects to link to feminism, whereas Richter did not have a particular reason why he painted apples.

Rebecca Lethbridge, ‘Artists’ 2022, Screenshots from my pdf of references and food meanings, images and text, September-November 2022, Size N/A.
The above screenshots from my pdf shows the artists I have referenced and researched during the autumn to help inspire and develop my work looking at ‘How have artists changed the way they portray food in their work over the past 60 years?’. By researching these artists I have learnt about the different symbolisms of food and how the way food has been portrayed has changed over time.

Rebecca Lethbridge, ‘Planning 80s and 90s’ 2022, Pen and images on paper, November 2022, A3.Independent studio project plan. Investigating ‘How have artists changed the way they portray food in their work over the past 60 years?’. Audrey Flack’s work included photorealism, encompasses painting, sculpture, and photography, often including bold colours and linked to feminism. Gerhard Richter was one of the most important contemporary German artists, and his work includes photorealistic paintings, photographs and glass pieces, sometimes incorporating a difference in dark and pale colours.
